Electronic Child and Adolescent Needs and Strength Assessment

The CANS assessment is a standardized tool used to evaluate the mental health needs and strengths of children and adolescents who are receiving behavioral health services. It is designed to be completed by a trained professional who has experience working with children and adolescents with mental health needs.

What it covers:

  • The child's mental health symptoms

  • Family relationships

  • Social and emotional functioning

  • Daily living skills

Benefits to receiving the CANS Assessment

It is important to note that the CANS assessment is a standardized tool and should only be administered by a trained professional who has been certified in its use. After the assessment is completed, the mental health professional will review the results with you and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your child's specific needs and strengths.

Results of the CANS assessment can be used to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to the specific needs and strengths of the child or adolescent. It can also be used to monitor progress over time and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

This assessment is largely used for children aged 3 and over that are in the Foster Care system. DFPS requires this assessment at least once a year for each child or adolescent in care to ensure that all needs are being addressed and strengths are utilized.
